An Experimental Study on the Indirect Damage of Photodynamic Action to the Muscle Tissues

Abstract
The author abserved that some of the rabbit subjected to study photodynamic response of the abdominal skin died occasionally after the irradiation of the sun light on the abdominal wall for an hour immediately following the administration of acrinol solution as photosensitizer by venous route. Among the many deaths brought about by the treatment, six were examined grossly and microscopically. Of the six two died one day, three two days and one three days after the treatment.
Grossly there were generalized congestion in the viscera and petechial hemorrhages on the serous membranes such as the pericardium and the pleura. The most striking changes were found, however, in both the right and left psoas muscles, which were characterized by extensive necrosis and hemorrhages. The abdominal muscle, diaphragm, psoas muscle and myocardium were examined microscopically on sections stained with H-E, and there were noted alterative changes such as degeneration and necrosis in the muscle fibers named above.
By the morphological findings the author concluded that certain injurious substance produced in the area inflamed by photodynamic action may be responsible for the lesions in the visceral tissues remote from the photodynamic field.
